Etymology

Aarle is first attested as arleh in 1249. Rixtel is first attested as ricstelle in 1179. Aarle derives from a compound of Old Dutch *are (“maple, Acer sp.”) and lo (“light forest”). Rixtel derives from a compound of an unclear first element and Middle Dutch stelle (“stable, safe haven”).
