Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Spanish Acayucan, from a Nahuan language (cf. Classical Nahuatl Ācayohcān (place covered in reeds, name of Acayuca, Hidalgo)), calqued from Popoluca; cf. Highland Popoluca Ca̱pñɨɨm (ca̱pi (arrow)), Oluta Popoluca Capeꞌnʉ̱p (cape (reed)), Sayula Popoluca Capnʉꞌm (cap (reed)). Doublet of Acayuca.
