Etymology[edit]
From Ancient Greek Ἀχελῷος (Akhelôios, “Achelous, a Greek shapeshifting deity”) + -saurus, named by Scott Sampson in 1994 in reference to its transitional combination of nasal boss and frill horns, reminiscent of a myth where Achelous transformed into a bull and had his horn broken off by Hercules.
