Potentially derived from a prehistoric hydronym Proto-Germanic *Abhara with the dative plural form of the collectivising suffix -iþi-. An alternative etymology posits a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *Abharitôs, a hydronym derived from the root *abh- (“bend outwards, shine”) or *ap-. Not a compound of aa (“river, stream”) and voorde (“ford”). Compare Asperen and Asperden.
• (Limburg) First attested as afordia in 1293. Etymology uncertain.
