Etymology[edit]

From Hebrew אֲחַשְׁוֵרוֹשׁ (Akhashverósh) from Old Persian 𐎧𐏁𐎹𐎠𐎼𐏁𐎠 (x-š-y-a-r-š-a /⁠xšayāršā⁠/, ruler among kings). Cognates include Xerxes from Ancient Greek Ξέρξης (Xérxēs), from the same Old Persian name.
