Etymology[edit]

Borrowed in the 21st century from Basque Alaia, from alai (joyful). For earlier use among English-speakers, compare Hebrew עֲלִיָּה ('alīyá, ascent), Arabic عَالِيَة (ʕāliya, high, exalted).
