English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Amazon +‎ -ess, phono-semantic matching of Japanese アマゾネス (Amazonesu, Amazons), from Ancient Greek Ἀμαζόνες pl (Amazónes).

Noun[edit]

Amazoness

  1. (rare, proscribed) An Amazon.

Usage notes[edit]

Usually considered redundant, as Amazon already specifically refers to a woman.
