Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as to anken in 1381-1383. Etymology unknown. Not derived from a term related to Middle Dutch eng (farmland next to a village), a compound of a personal name and heem (home, settlement) or dialectal ank (pool, kolk lake). The toponym bears a passing resemblance to Old High German anko (salve, grease, butter); the significance (if any) of this resemblance is unknown.

  • Hyphenation: An‧kum
