First attested as anning in 1475. Derived from a toponym derived from Old Dutch Ano (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ing- and a second toponym derived from a compound of nij (“new”) and hof (“farmstead, homestead”). The two toponyms are further suffixed with hoek (“isolated place”). Named after a pair of former farms.
