Etymology[edit]

From the Latin annō Hegirae (in the year of the Hijra), from annō (in the year) (the ablative of annus (year)) + Hegirae (of the Hijra) (genitive of Hegira (the Hijra)). Formed in imitation of the Christian Anno Domini.
