road

[edit]

Given that Swadesh started with Amerindian languages, and 1955 clarified his choice by "path, road" and 1971 finally to "path" only, the translation should be дорожка or тропа. HJJHolm 07:06, 15 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

94 to bite

[edit]

грызть with the primary meaning 'to nibble' and other things is by far outside the concept of Swadesh and had to be cancelled. Thus S.A. Starostin as a native speaker gives only кусать! HJJHolm 17:54, 15 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

'Poetic' and dated...

[edit]

Please, don't add dated words. It confuses comparation. Only modern words. Švarn Lvovič (talk) 14:57, 27 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Švarn Lvovič We don't have such rules here. We include dated, poetic and archaic words. I disagree with your edits here and at Appendix:Slavic Swadesh lists so I have temporarily protected the page from you. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 06:25, 28 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ты is a real cognate to the dated pronoun thou, not you - as well as German du and French tu. GregZak (talk) 05:45, 12 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@GregZak: I think you didn't check the date of that post: "06:25, 28 July 2017". The last edit of that user was around the same time. Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 06:09, 12 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
You are right, but I checked the list. GregZak (talk) 06:55, 12 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

I see very phanaberic reply...protect...You mean this page is not for comparation? OK. But be objective and understand Swadesh list is only for modern standard languages comparison. Привет. Švarn Lvovič (talk) 06:39, 28 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

I regret Wiki is on eye of totally engaged obscurantism) It's not scientific. But it's your business. Švarn Lvovič (talk) 06:47, 28 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

I hope you realize that these Swadesh lists have little real value. We provide them because there are some people who find them interesting. Generally speaking, in the case of words that are unrelated such as boy and мальчик, this has no use. Sometimes we have to look hard, including st dated words, dialect, poetry, etc., to find a word that is genetically related, and this is the thing that has some usefulness. For example, yard, град, город. But the main ideas behind Swadesh lists, their original purpose, have been shown to be misguided. The lists were an interesting idea, but they have led to nowhere. They're just trinkets, children's toys. You should not take them too seriously. —Stephen (Talk) 12:01, 28 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
