Etymology[edit]

Stockholm's new international airport, planned since 1944, was named in a contest in 1958. The jury settled for Arlanda, which combined the suggested Arland with the verb landa (to land). The airport is situated in Ärlinghundra hundred (a court district), which in a document in 1316 was mentioned as provincia Aarland.
