Etymology[edit]

First attested as assem in 1397. Likely a compound of Old Dutch *ask (ash, Fraxinus excelsior) and hēm (home, settlement). According to an alternative hypothesis, the toponym is a contracted compound of Old Dutch askman (pirate) and hēm.
