Etymology[edit]
From a Roman gens, likely Latin Aurelius. Its adoption during the Victorian era was probably influenced by William Harrison Ainsworth's novel The Elixir of Life, in which the protagonist Auriol is a man; Ainsworth probably derived the name from the similar Latin name Aureolus.[1] All are ultimately from aurum (“gold”).
