Etymology[edit]

Recorded as Aigrun in the Domesday Book, the actual origin of this placename is still uncertain. Perhaps it is a compound of Old English ēa (river) and the dative plural form of gāra (gore, strip of land) or, alternatively, a fossilised survival of Old English ēagor (water, sea), from which eagre.
