Proper noun[edit]

La Bassa f

  1. The parts of Switzerland that are lower than Grisons.

Usage notes[edit]

La Bassa with the definite article and a capital B refers to those parts of central/northern Switzerland that are lower than Grisons (i.e. much of the country). It is a very common expression in Romansch. It is often a purely geographic designation, but is occasionally used pejoratively (= "those down there").
