Etymology[edit]

Potentially attested as batenburg in 1076-1081, attested with certainty as battenburg in 1166. Perhaps a compound of Old Dutch bata (good) and burg (fortified settlement, castle). A different interpretation identifies this settlement with Batavodurum.
