Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Potentially attested as beegedem in 1202, attested with certainty as bekede in 1264. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps related to boog (bend, riverbend) with the dative plural form of a collectivising suffix Old Dutch *-iþi. Erroneously interpreted as a compound of an uncertain first element and heem (home, settlement). Compare Beugen and Beugt.

See also Limburgish Bieëgdje.
