Etymology[edit]

From Bett (bed) +‎ Seecher (pisser, urinator) +‎ -sch (female suffix), thus “bed-wetting girl”. The name is due to the plant's diuretic effect. Compare dialectal German Bettseicher, French pissenlit; further also the synonym Pissblumm, Dutch pisbloem, etc.
