Etymology[edit]

Potentially attested as bodengrauen in 1064, attested with certainty as bodengrave in 1351-1356. Derived from a hydronym, derived in turn from a compound of Old Dutch Bodo (a personal name), bodo (messenger) or an older hydronym cognate to Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐌿𐌸𐍃 (bauþs, mute, deaf) and grave (excavated or canalised watercourse).
