Named after the German chemist Hans Theodor Bucherer (1869–1949), who studied some properties of this reaction.

  1. (organic chemistry) The reversible conversion of a naphthol to a naphthylamine in the presence of ammonia and sodium bisulfite, widely used in the synthesis of aminonaphthalenesulfonic acids that are dye precursors.
