Etymology[edit]

First attested as casterle in 1231. Etymology uncertain. The most probable etymology is a compound of Middle Dutch *caster (type of tree) and lo (light forest). Less-likely, alternative derivations include a compound of Latin castra (army camp) and lo (light forest) or a compound of Middle Dutch caste (granary, storehouse) and either herel (small sandy ridge) or lo (light forest). Compare Castenray, Casteren, Castert and Kasteren.

  • Hyphenation: Cas‧tel‧ré
