From Middle High German kirchwīhe, from Old High German chirichwīhī, from chirich (church) + wīhī (consecration), meaning “festival celebrating the consecration of a church (or the anniversary of such consecration)”. Equivalent to Chilche (church) +‎ Wiihi (consecration). Cognate with German Kirchweih.
