I think part of the problem (specifically w/ Nuzlockes) is a lot of ppl watching take it more seriously than we do. I def care about winning and doing our best, but I also don't wanna spend long periods of time making sure every little thing we do is right. To me, that's boring.

How would you guys feel if I did a nuzlocke but we loosened up the first encounter rule so I get to choose my encounter on each route.

Gives the challenge of a nuzlocke without the limiting of not being able to use what i want.

Here are the rules for a Nuzlocke:

      • If a Pokemon faints, it’s dead. You need to release it, store it in a box for the rest of the run, or transfer it to another game. You can’t use it until you’ve successfully become the Pokemon League Champion and completed the Nuzlocke.
      • You can only catch the first Pokemon you encounter in each location. This includes caves, towns, routes, and so on - if the area has an official title, it counts as an independent location where you can capture one single Pokemon, provided it’s the first one you come across. If you make it faint or it flees, you can’t catch a new one - no second chances. This doesn’t apply to static encounters, although using Legendary Pokemon is frowned upon. You can catch Shiny Pokemon regardless of the rules, although the consensus on whether or not they’re allowed to be used is widely disputed.

pokemon’s greatest issue in difficulty isn’t lack of artificial modes, it’s knowledge. The more you know, the easier it is to make the right decisions. Brock was once hard if you didn’t know typing. It’s why nuzlockes work— you’re not allowed to always make the right decisions.

A Soul link is 2 separate Nuzlockes, where Pokemon caught on each route are linked.
A Nuzlocke is where if your Pokemon faints, yu can no longer use it. Which means in a Soul link, the other person also can no longer use whichever Pokemon was linked. It's good stressful FUN! >:o)

I've actually spoken to TPCi about this.

They confirmed to me that this is incorrect.

They haven't cut out people for doing Nuzlockes or anything like that. They don't care as long as you follow the confines of what's possible in the game.

I imagine their experience was probably in the context of the two of them doing it officially for Nintendo. The Pokemon Company probably didn't want an 'official' nuzlocke by Nintendo.

      They do have bizarre takes.
But, this take doesn’t seem real.
I mean, if this is true, then, They’re saying that Self-impose rules = hacking.
Who on their right mind would consider this hacking? Not even anti-nuzlocke people.

This is why I doubt that part a little.
    • 2022 September 18, PaulGolden88, Twitter[30], archived from the original on 2022-09-19:
Let me see if I have this right. You can do nuzlockes no problem as long as nothing else in the game is changed. If you do randomizer nuzlockes, that's breaking the rules. Am I correct on that assessment?

It sounds to me like they were talking about a traditional nuzlocke, where u gotta manually release the pokemon, and TPCI were talking about the modded games that add modes that do that stuff automatically, since I'd assume they'd want them using the same version as in stores
    • 2022 September 18, FamiliarAlien, Twitter[33], archived from the original on 2022-09-19:
??? Yeah I was going to say most nuzlockes are done on unmodified hardware and are merely following a set of self imposed rules. I would understand TPC/Game Freak potentially sticking their nose up to randomizers because that does often involve emulation but not challenge runs!

The Pokémon Company has worked hard to not be associated with mortality and stuff like that before (Like this https://gamespot.com/articles/pokemon-usa-threatens-to-sue-cancer-researchers/1100-6141487/), so it makes sense that an official Nuzlocke wouldn't sit well with them.
    • 2022 September 18, CaseyInscoe1, Twitter[35], archived from the original on 2022-09-19:
Perhaps nuzlockes weren't well known to the company and they mistook it for rom hacks?

A draw? Its 1 player gone.

All of this will go happen this week on my twitch!
