Etymology[edit]

First attested as in dichtere in 1228. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps a compound formed from an unknown first component related to gedijen (thrive, prosper), dik (thick, fat) and dicht (dense, closed) and Old Dutch heri (sandy ridge).
