Etymology[edit]
The surname is derived from the place name in Belgium. As -voet in placenames on occasion alternates with -voort or similar,[1][2] there are two suggested origins:
- Celtic, meaning "divine ford," akin to Proto-Celtic *dēwos + *ɸritus. This would make the name similar to the French place name Jort from Gaulish *Diuoritum.[3]
- Germanic, meaning "public ford," akin to Proto-Germanic *þeudō + *furduz, compare Dievoort.
