Etymology[edit]

First attested as uteradosum alias dosum in 1475. Difficult to interpret. Potentially derived from a compound of Old Frisian Doewe (a personal name) and heem (home, settlement) or from the dative plural form of dialectal Dutch Low Saxon does (swamp or peat bog covered in moss).
