From Russian Донба́сс (Donbáss), abbreviation of Доне́цкий бассе́йн (Donéckij basséjn, Donets Basin), after Доне́ц (Donéc, Donets River) + бассе́йн (basséjn, basin). Compare Donbas, from Ukrainian.
