Etymology[edit]

First attested as Doorning in 1936. Likely a compound of doorn (thorn, thorn bush) and eng (agricultural land belonging to a village). A derivation from Old Dutch thorn (thorn, thorn bush) with collectivising suffix -ingô- is less likely. Originally the name of a large section of farmland.
