Etymology[edit]

First attested as in die Douff, auss der Douffen in 1611. Derived from a compound of the toponyms Douve and Genhout. Douve is potentially the name of a house derived from duif (pigeon), while Genhout is a compound of the definite article ge and hout (rising deciduous forest).
