Etymology[edit]
First attested as twingelo in 1181. Compound of an unclear first element and lo (“light forest”). The first element has been interpreted as Proto-Germanic *thwangi (“belt”) and Middle Dutch dwing (“legal district, reserved area”). Compare Balloo.
