Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Modified from Dijon. The digraph <ij> is fairly rare among European languages, but it is common in Dutch, and in older Dutch spellings it is generally interchangeable with <y>. Thus, some people may think <ij> is "too Dutch" for a foreign word, and that it therefore must be a misspelling for <y>. Compare byou.
