Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as hemsere in 1210. Etymology unclear. Tentative etymologies include a compound of Old Dutch eem (water) and heri (sandy ridge) and a derivation from Proto-Germanic *Amizwari (people of the Eems). The mid-word -t- is a later insertion.
