Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
First attested as in villis esethe in 1309. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from an ancient hydronym, derived in turn from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eǵ- (“move”). An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from Proto-Germanic *aiganą (“to possess”). Compare Eexta.
