From Latin Aegyptum, accusative of Aegyptus (Egypt), from Ancient Greek Αἴγυπτος (Aíguptos, river Nile, Egypt), from Egyptian ḥwt-kꜣ-ptḥ (temple of the ka of Ptah), the name of a temple to the god Ptah at Memphis, whose Late Egyptian pronunciation is reflected by Akkadian 𒄭𒆪𒌒𒋫𒀪 (ḫikuptaḫ).
