Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as suthempe in 1046. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps a tautological compound of Proto-Germanic *ama- (current, stream) and Old Dutch *apa (river, current). The first element Old Dutch sut (south) used to distinguish the settlement from Noord-Empe gradually disappeared.

Pronunciation[edit]

Proper noun[edit]

Empe n

  1. A village in Brummen, Gelderland, Netherlands.
