Etymology[edit]
From Low German and Middle Low German erpel, which is borrowed from Middle Dutch erpel (introduced by Flemish settlers in the East), probably a pet form of the Old Saxon personal name Erpo or Old High German Erpho (literally “the brown one”), from Proto-Germanic *erpaz (“brown”). The word is not part of modern standard Dutch.
