Etymology[edit]

First attested as finckum in 1335. Derived from a compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian hēm (home, settlement). The first element is not vinke (low-quality turf) or a personal name. The Dutch version of the toponym was borrowed from a significantly older form of the Frisian name.
