Etymology[edit]

This sign uses the same handshape as all ASL possessives, e.g. FlatB@Chest-PalmBack (my, mine), and FlatB@IpsiChest-FingerUpPalmAcross RoundHoriz FlatB@ContraChest-FingerUpPalmAside (our). Its locations and orientations index the referents (the possessors).

  • This one-handed ASL sign is produced as follows:
    1. Posture the dominant hand in the “flat B” handshape about half an arm’s length in front of the chest, extended finger(s) of the dominant hand pointing up. The palm faces the literal or figurative location of the referent (the possessor) farthest to the nondominant side of the signer.
    2. Slightly drop the hand and move it in an arc toward the dominant side of the body.
    3. Posture the dominant hand in the “flat B” handshape about half an arm’s length in front of the chest, extended finger(s) of the dominant hand pointing up. The palm faces the literal or figurative location of the referent (the possessor) farthest to the dominant side of the signer.
