Etymology[edit]
Attested as Ferdinandus Fort in 1655. Derived from fort (“fortress”) and Ferdinandus (“a personal name”). Named after a former Spanish fortress located in the Ferdinanduspolder, which was named in turn after Ferdinand of Austria (1609-1641).
