From Proto-Nuristani *gawíša, *gawíši, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gawHíšHs (desire for cows), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷow-h₁éysh₂-s, from *gʷow- (cow) + *h₁eysh₂- (to propel, strengthen). Cognate with Prasuni gíṣ, givë́ṣ, Ashkun gëvī́ṣ, Waigali geṣ, Vedic Sanskrit गविष् (gavíṣ), गविष (gaviṣá).
