First attested as gala in 1174. Etymology unknown. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from a compound hydronym formed from either Proto-Germanic *galan (“sing, rage”) or gal (“bile, yellow”) and aa (“water, river”) or from Proto-Germanic *alha- (“homestead, farmstead”) prefixed with the collectivising prefix ga-.
