From Old High German geiz, from Proto-Germanic *gaits, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰayd-. Cognate with German Geiß, Dutch geit, English goat, Icelandic geit, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌹𐍄𐍃 (gaits); and with Latin haedus (kid).
