A derivation from Proto-Germanic *gabra (wetland, swamp) suffixed with *-ikja- has also been proposed. Compare Blerick, Bunnik, Cuijk, Gever, Lopik, Maurik, Mook, Niftrik, Odijk, Varik, Woezik and Fellerich.
