Etymology[edit]

From German Gottschee, first mentioned in 1363 as Middle High German Gotsche.[1] Compare the Slovenian name Kočevsko.

  1. A region in southern Slovenia which was historically inhabited by the Germanic Gottscheers who spoke Gottscheerish.
  2. Former name of Kočevje, the main city of this region.
