Etymology[edit]

Unknown; first attested as Old Welsh Guoy. The element -wy is found in other river names such as Monnow, Medway, and Conwy. A borrowing from a Pre-Celtic substrate language cannot be ruled out, as gwy does not match any obvious nouns in Welsh.[1]
