Borrowed from Arabic حَمَاس (ḥamās, literally enthusiasm), an acronym for حَرَكَة اَلْمُقَاوَمَةِ الْإِسْلَامِيَّةِ (ḥarakat al-muqāwama l-ʔislāmiyya, Islamic Resistance Movement). The pronunciation with /x/ is from or influenced by Hebrew חַמַאס.
