Etymology[edit]

First attested as herdingfelde in 1105. Derived from a compound of Old Dutch *Hardo (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ing- and veld (field). Originally the name of a single village, currently split in Boven-Hardinxveld and Neder-Hardinxveld.
