Luxembourgish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German höuvet, from Old High German *houvid (attested as houvot, hovit, hovidis), northern variant of houbit, from Proto-Germanic *haubidą, *haubudą. The -v- was elided, probably when the vowel or diphthong was still rounded, thus Middle High German *höuet, whence the modern Luxemburgish form is regularly derived. Cognate with German Haupt, Dutch hoofd, English head.

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

Heet n (plural Heeder)

  1. head (of vegetables, e.g. lettuce)
