Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as hummert in 1402. Etymology unknown. A proposed derivation from a compound of the plural form of hoog (high, tall) and the plural form of berg (hill, elevated place) matches neither the oldest attestations nor the terrain around the settlement.

See also Limburgish Hómmert.
